Limited Edition Bronze Sculptures by Jo-Ann Shaw
All of my sculptures have been created using the lost wax process. This is a time honoured technique that sees molten bronze being poured into a one time use mould. To make editions, a reusable first mould must be made from the original to cast wax copies which are then sent to the foundry. The foundry creates the second single use mould from the the wax copy and then the wax is melted out of it, hence the "lost wax" nomenclature. The resulting cavity is filled with bronze which cools and hardens and after which the mould material is removed to reveal the bronze. It is then cleaned up using power tools and a patina added. This, of course, is a very truncated version of the process. I learned this technique while working at a bronze foundry many years ago so I know the method very well. To keep my costs down, I create my own first mould and cast the wax copies myself. This also has the added benefit of quality control. I get to fix any casting flaws and by the time it leaves my hands before being sent to the foundry, I am satisfied that it is the best cast possible.
